| Notes: | From website managed by L. Everett Sanders http://ringwithsanders.com/sand-1/web-content/public_html/Agentrip5.html He asserts that Sophia was born on Nov 20th. During his trip in 2001, he visited St Nicholas in Harwich (air-itch) where John and Sophia were married on Dec 19, 1792. He reportedly found the records in Chelmsford (county office for Essex). "We verified that they were, in deed, married here (Dec 19, 1782) and that John had come from Ipswich. Sophia was a minor (17) and was married with her father's consent." Also from the website - quoted from the church registry - she was known as "Sophy" " 'Sophy' -- as her name is given on the registry of baptisms of the church -- might have been just a little spoiled. You see, she was not only the baby of the family, but the only girl. She had to have been either "picked on" continually or was completely spoiled by her three older brothers. When she got married, there was Arthur, who was 28, John Harwood (named for his grandfather), who was 26, Samuel, 23, and George, who was 20. Arthur and Hannah Taylor had their trials when it came to raising children. Their first child apparently died young. His name had been Samuel, and so, after having Arthur and John Harwood, they named their next child Samuel again. Unfortunately, he died within a few months. Another year came, another child, and again, they named him Samuel. Perhaps there's something about the third try. Then George, and finally, Sophy. Interesting that Sophy's mother, Hannah, was two years older than George Washington. Her grandfather, John Harwood, probably told Sophy stories about the big city of London. Apparently he had married Mary Schooling there in 1728 in a suburb of London called Rainham. |
